Small Business Innovation Research and Technology Transfer programs award grants for R&D with commercial potential. Over $4 billion annually across 11 federal agencies. Phase I: $50,000-$275,000. Phase II: $500,000-$1.5 million. No repayment required. But exclusively for technology and scientific research.

Community Advantage Program

Works through CDFIs to reach underserved communities. Primarily lending (up to $350,000) but some CDFIs pair loans with grant-funded technical assistance.

Disaster Relief

After declared disasters, the SBA offers EIDLs. Loans, not grants. The COVID-era EIDL Advance grant program ($10,000) has ended.

Key takeaway: The only recurring federal grants for small businesses are SBIR/STTR for R&D. If your business isn't conducting scientific or technical research, federal grants are not a realistic path.

Why Scam Sites Advertise "Free SBA Grants"

• They charge $30-$200+ for publicly available information
• They reference real programs but imply money is available to anyone
• They use official-looking seals
• They harvest personal information

Rule: if someone asks you to pay to access a grant, it's a scam. Legitimate grants are free to apply for through Grants.gov or SAM.gov.

• SBA 504 Loans: Fixed-rate for real estate/equipment, up to $5.5 million
• SBA Microloans: Up to $50,000 through nonprofit intermediaries, 8-13%
• State and local programs: Many states run legitimate grant programs tied to economic development
• Foundation grants: Amber Grant, FedEx Small Business Grant, community foundations. $5,000-$50,000, competitive
