Every year, thousands of US small business owners lose time and money chasing grants that don't exist. The most damaging myth in small business finance is that the SBA provides grants for starting or running a business. It does not. And never has. The SBA provides loans, loan guarantees and technical assistance. This misconception is aggressively exploited by scammers who charge fees for access to "government grants" that aren't real.

That said, genuine grant funding does exist for US small businesses. It's just more specific and competitive than the myths suggest. Here is what actually exists in 2026.

Federal Grants: Primarily for R&D-Focused Businesses

The federal government's primary grant mechanism for small businesses is the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. These programs distribute funding across 11 federal agencies. Including the Department of Defense, NIH, NSF and DOE. And are specifically designed for businesses conducting research and development with commercial potential.

Key facts:

Important 2026 update: SBIR/STTR congressional authorization expired in September 2025. Reauthorization was pending as of early 2026. Before building plans around these programs, check the current status at sbir.gov. Individual agency programs may continue under existing appropriations even during a lapse in authorization, but the situation requires monitoring.

For businesses not focused on R&D, federal grants are largely limited to specific sectors: agricultural businesses (USDA Rural Development programs), businesses in designated rural areas and certain manufacturing workforce development initiatives under the SBA's Made in America Manufacturing Initiative.

All legitimate federal grant opportunities are listed at Grants.gov. The official federal grant portal. Creating a free account and setting keyword alerts by NAICS code or topic is the most efficient way to monitor relevant opportunities.

State Economic Development Grants

Every US state operates its own economic development agency that runs grant and incentive programs for small businesses. These programs are less well-known than federal programs and typically have lower competition. Common categories include:

Search your state's economic development agency website directly. Searching "[your state] small business grants 2026" produces more current results than aggregator sites, which frequently list expired programmes. Your local SBDC (Small Business Development Center) at americassbdc.org is also a reliable source of current state-level opportunities. They track what's open and can advise on fit before you invest application time.

Corporate Grant Programmes

Many large corporations run small business grant programmes, typically focused on specific demographics or business types. These are real, competitive and often overlooked by business owners focused exclusively on government sources.

Active programmes as of 2026 include sector-specific and demographic-focused grants from national organisations and corporations. The US Chamber of Commerce maintains an updated list at uschamber.com/co/run/business-financing. Eligibility, amounts and deadlines vary widely. The common thread is that these are competitive merit-based awards, not guaranteed funding.

How to Spot a Grant Scam

The grant landscape attracts fraud. Reliable indicators that an opportunity is not legitimate:

The SBA communicates only from @sba.gov email addresses. All legitimate federal grants are listed on Grants.gov. Any grant opportunity not findable through official government sources warrants scepticism.

Four Actions to Take This Week

  1. Create a free account on Grants.gov and set keyword alerts for your industry sector. This covers all legitimate federal grant opportunities in one place
  2. Contact your local SBDC at americassbdc.org for a free consultation on current state-level grant programmes relevant to your business type and location
  3. Check your state's STEP programme eligibility. If your business exports or is considering exporting, the SBA State Trade Expansion Program reimburses real marketing costs
  4. If you conduct R&D, monitor sbir.gov for the reauthorization status and open solicitations. SBIR Phase I has approximately a 20% success rate and accepts first-time applicants
