Stop searching for SBA grants -- they do not exist for most small businesses. Here is what the SBA actually offers and where to find real funding in 2026.
Google "SBA grants" and you will find over 40 million results. Most are misleading, many are scams, and none will lead to a grant from the SBA to start your business. The Small Business Administration has never offered general-purpose grants to entrepreneurs.
The SBA's core function is guaranteeing loans — reducing risk for lenders so they approve borrowers who might otherwise be declined. It is a loan guarantee agency, not a grant-making body.
The SBA guarantees up to 85% of loans under $150,000 and up to 75% of loans up to $5 million through its 7(a) program. This guarantee goes to the lender, not to you. The SBA also provides:
Small Business Innovation Research and Technology Transfer programs award grants for R&D with commercial potential. Over $4 billion annually across 11 federal agencies. Phase I: $50,000–$275,000. Phase II: $500,000–$1.5 million. No repayment required. But exclusively for technology and scientific research.
Works through CDFIs to reach underserved communities. Primarily lending (up to $350,000) but some CDFIs pair loans with grant-funded technical assistance.
After declared disasters, the SBA offers EIDLs — loans, not grants. The COVID-era EIDL Advance grant program ($10,000) has ended.
Key takeaway: The only recurring federal grants for small businesses are SBIR/STTR for R&D. If your business isn't conducting scientific or technical research, federal grants are not a realistic path.
Rule: if someone asks you to pay to access a grant, it's a scam. Legitimate grants are free to apply for through Grants.gov or SAM.gov.
